The CurrentBody Skin LED Mask Series 2 and the Solawave Wrinkle Retreat Pro are two of the most-searched FDA-cleared LED masks. CurrentBody adds a deep near-infrared wavelength and a larger silicone shape that reaches the chin; Solawave fits more LEDs and four wavelengths into a 3-minute session. Here's how they compare on light, time, fit, evidence and price.

Solawave vs CurrentBody specs, side by side

CurrentBody lists the Series 2 at $469.99 on currentbody.us; the Wrinkle Retreat Pro lists at $399. CurrentBody's irradiance and dose figures come from an independent reviewer rather than the brand. Figures were checked on September 16, 2026.

Irradiance is measured differently from brand to brand (at the LED surface or at skin distance), and some brands don’t publish it, so treat cross-brand irradiance figures as directional.

Which light does each mask use?

Both masks use red light around 630nm and near-infrared at 830nm. CurrentBody adds 1072nm deep near-infrared, which it says reaches deeper layers of skin; Solawave adds 605nm amber and 660nm deep red, aimed at tone, the look of redness and firmness. Solawave has 320 LEDs to CurrentBody's 236.

Filled dots are visible wavelengths. Dashed outlines are near-infrared, which you can’t see but which reaches deeper into the skin.

Does Solawave deliver more light than CurrentBody?

Per second, on paper, yes; per session, no. Solawave lists 65 mW/cm² of total output and 11.7 J/cm² per 3-minute session. Reviewer Geeky Posh lists the Series 2 at 30 mW/cm² and 18 J/cm² per 10-minute session. CurrentBody delivers more total energy, and Solawave delivers its dose in under a third of the time. Solawave's 8-week study used its own 3-minute protocol.

How much time does each mask take?

Both brands recommend 3 to 5 sessions a week. At five sessions a week:

Solawave
15 min a week (3 min, 5x)
CurrentBody
50 min a week (10 min, 5x)

Over 8 weeks, that's about 2 hours with Solawave and 6.7 hours with CurrentBody. Both are cordless while in use. Solawave's controller counts down each session and switches off on its own; Solawave says a charge lasts about 20 sessions, and Geeky Posh reported 10 to 15 sessions per charge on the Series 2.

How do the two masks fit?

Both are flexible silicone. CurrentBody redesigned the Series 2 with a larger shape, a nose flap, chin coverage and a 3-way adjustable strap, and says it covers 24% more of the face than the original. The Wrinkle Retreat Pro has two adjustable straps and detachable goggles, and packs flat into its storage bag.

If lower-face and jawline coverage is your priority, CurrentBody's shape is the stronger choice. In Solawave's consumer panel, 91% of participants said the Wrinkle Retreat Pro was comfortable to wear after first use.

What does the clinical evidence show?

Both brands publish their own results. Neither has published a large, independent, placebo-controlled trial of its at-home mask, so treat both as supportive.

Solawave Wrinkle Retreat Pro: 8-week home-use study

Solawave commissioned Kosmoscience Group, an independent contract research organization, to test the Wrinkle Retreat Pro on 32 adults aged 37–70 using it 3 minutes a day, 5 days a week. At 8 weeks, a dermatologist graded a visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles in all participants, and cutometer readings showed firmness improving by up to 16.7% and elasticity by up to 14.9%. The study is small, company-funded and had no placebo group, so read it as supportive rather than definitive. Solawave publishes the full results on its science and certifications page.

CurrentBody Series 2: brand-reported results

CurrentBody's product listings cite an 8-week result of 30% fewer wrinkles and 57% more plumpness. CurrentBody also includes a Veritace card with each mask that, it says, verifies how that individual unit performs.

Are these masks FDA-cleared?

Yes. The Wrinkle Retreat Pro and the CurrentBody Series 2 (510(k) K250966, cleared June 2025) are FDA-cleared. Solawave's clearance number, K252983, can be looked up in the FDA 510(k) database. FDA clearance means a device was found substantially equivalent to one already legally marketed; it is not the same as FDA approval.

What do owners and reviewers say?

Owners of the Wrinkle Retreat Pro most often mention how quickly sessions go and changes in tone and fine lines within the first month:

“Facial lines and wrinkles are definitely improved after 3-4 weeks of use… This mask is so easy and so quick to use.”

Susan R., age 58–67, verified buyer review on solawave.co

“After just two weeks, my skin tone has evened out as if I'm wearing my light BB cream.”

Joy K., age 58–67, verified buyer review on solawave.co

The complaints we saw most

  • A few owners found the Velcro straps fiddly or short, especially when pairing the mask with the neck attachment.
  • CurrentBody reviewers mention the 10-minute session and, per Wareable, a money-back guarantee that requires the mask to be unused.

  • Wareable rated the CurrentBody Series 2 4.6 out of 5 and called it best for supporting mature skin rejuvenation.
  • Good Gear tested the Wrinkle Retreat Pro for six months and reported visible improvement in redness with consistent use.

Frequently asked questions

Is Solawave or CurrentBody better for wrinkles?

Both are FDA-cleared and both use red and 830nm near-infrared light. CurrentBody adds 1072nm deep near-infrared and delivers more energy per session over 10 minutes; Solawave adds amber and deep red and takes 3 minutes. Consistency matters most, so pick the routine you'll keep.

What is 1072nm deep near-infrared?

It's a longer infrared wavelength that CurrentBody says reaches deeper layers of skin than 830nm. You can't see it. Solawave doesn't use it; its longest wavelength is 830nm.

Can I use an LED mask on darker skin?

Brands generally say their masks suit all skin types. Solawave advises people with Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI, or pigment-prone skin, to check with a dermatologist about frequency, because higher melanin absorbs more visible light.

Who shouldn't use an LED mask?

Don't use an LED mask if you're pregnant, prone to seizures, have active cancer, or take medication that causes light sensitivity, and wait until you've fully healed after facial procedures. Read each brand's full contraindications and ask your doctor if you're unsure.
